Three Spanish Churches Every Tourist Should Visit
contributor
They say European cities have some of the best examples of architecture in the world. These are some of the oldest cities in the Western hemisphere, after all. Europe has a great deal of cities that are full of interesting architectural sights. In fact, Barcelona, an internationally renowned a tourist destination and one of the most popular cheap holidays to Spain, have numerous historical monuments, including eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites. I was once blessed to get a chance to bring my whole family to Spain, in Barcelona. It was truly educational, and something that I had been waiting for since I developed an interest in European architecture. The amazing fact was that my family shared what I wanted to know as well. Because there are numerous historical churches scattered around the city of Barcelona we decided to spend a whole day visiting these churches and revel in its historical wonders.
Our first stop was the Basilica i Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Familia, commonly known as the Sagrada Familia, a large Roman Catholic church in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain, designed by Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi. The spectacular church, with incredible towers and facades, is a must-see in Barcelona. It has a few impressive and hulking towers, and it is even meant to have a total of 18 towers according to Gaudi’s original designs. It is said to accommodate as much as 13,000 devout Roman Catholics inside it. That number cannot be accommodated in the current incarnation of the Church as authorities have only begun undertaking additional construction of the Church. But you now have a clear picture painted of how huge it’s going to be. It just might rival the size of St. Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican. Since Gaudi played an active role in directing the construction of the Sagrada Familia until his death in 1926, he was buried in the cathedral’s crypt. There are also the three facades – namely the Nativity, Passion and Glory facades – that are all exquisite works of art. They also let people climb the towers via lift or the stairs themselves. I would have loved to give it a try, but my children were all afraid of heights. The spectacular church, with incredible towers and facades, is a must-see in Barcelona.
We headed off next to Santa Maria del Mar, also known as the Cathedral of the Sea, a Gothic church that was built between 1329 and 1383. It is one of the oldest in Catalonia, and another example of Gothic construction. Santa Maria del Mar is obviously smaller than Sagrada Familia, but could still be a good place to visit on a holiday. The sad thing is that there are only a few artifacts and works of art left in the Church as they had been lost in 1936. This was a year of anticlerical disturbances, and these disruptions had led to the destruction of several art works including a Baroque retable created by Deodat Casanoves and Salvador Gurri. Too bad, it would have been a sight to behold inside a Gothic church like Santa Maria del Mar.

Last but, of course, not the least is the Barcelona Cathedral. The Cathedral is another illustration of Gothic architecture in Spain. It houses some artifacts, including the miraculous cross that had been installed in one of the ships that participated in the Battle of Lepanto. There is also a cloister there where 13 geese are kept, symbolic of the age of the Church’s patron when she was martyred during the Roman persecution of early Christianity.
If you are one who is interested in religious architecture, especially medieval architecture, these three churches should be more than enough reason for you to find cheap flights to Spain. Of course, there are a host of other attractions all across the country, not just Barcelona.
