An Overview of 3 Business Website Designs

Posted on February 27th, 2007. About General.

One of the most important principles of any website design is to actually know what you want your website to do! You need to identify what your website’s objectives will be…

Okay, that may sound obvious but it is amazing how many companies approach a web design agency without thinking through their brief and before they have identified what their primary business objectives for a website will be.

Generally speaking, there are three main reasons why most companies want a website: each one requires a different type of website and a different approach to design…

1- Want to streamline the time spent on the telephone by your employees providing support calls and
processing enquiries?

To be successful, this kind of website requires a lot of content and at least one FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) page so you can provide your visitors with detailed and useful information about the products and services that your company provides.

If you can answer online the most common questions that your employees deal with over the telephone then you should be able to cut down on the amount of enquiries and support calls to the office.

Rather than just putting an email address on your website, set up an online contact form with form fields for the visitor to fill in and complete: that way you can qualify their enquiry and process it more efficiently, again making better use of your employee’s time.

2- Want to raise your brand awareness, promote your company and improve it’s reputation within it’s industry?

You may already have an established offline business and to help extend your brand awareness online you should incorporate your corporate identity, company logos and graphics, into your website banners and colour scheme.

Do not worry if you have not got an established company logo or graphics. If you choose a professional website agency they will be able to design and create these for you.

By using the same imagery found on your traditional marketing stationery, such as letterheads, promotional brochures and leaflets, visitors to the website will recognise your company branding. This is a powerful branding technique to use to promote your company and one that should not be ignored.

3- Want to increase your company’s sales and turnover?

Sell your products or services on the Internet - 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year.

Setting up an ecommerce website is a commercially viable way to increase your company sales, especially when you compare the start up costs against that of a conventional bricks-and-mortar shop.

If you make sure that your website can automatically handle transactions via a secure shopping basket (or cart) system that processes online orders and send receipts to customers via email, then it will be almost a hands-free business. All that will be manually required is the actual order packing and shipping.

Any company can have a website that ranks really well in the search engines, for its chosen keywords, but for it to be truly successful and provide a return on investment it needs to meet clearly defined targets.

Defining the purpose of your business website will help your web designers understand your requirements and they will be able to build you a website specifically aimed at your target market – greatly increasing the likelihood of a successful online business website and a quicker return on your investment!

What is an Affiliate Program?

Posted on February 21st, 2007. About General.

Are you trying to find a great affiliate program? Here is how affiliate programs work. The person promoting the projects is the affiliate, and the company with the products is the merchant. The merchant (company) pays a percentage of any sales resulting from any click through (via banner or text link) to their web site from an affiliate partner’s website. Many webmasters and internet gurus are doing very well with only a handful of affiliate programs. Once you find a good one, you kind of seem to get stuck on it until you are positive you are making every penny possible. Before spending a lot of time and money marketing an affiliate program, always check it out first.

Once you start making sales, you will want to keep good records of the transactions. Personally, I use an Excel spreadsheet for the daily sales, and then input everything into QuickBooks once a month. It is also a good idea to keep all emails you get regarding sales. Many programs give you an option of receiving an email every time a sale is made. This is a great way of staying on top of your sales and also provides you with a record of transactions.

You are probably wondering how to get started with Affiliate Marketing. There are tons of places to learn more about becoming an Affiliate. I have written a great program to help people get started in the business. You can find it and my affiliate program directory at my website below. You will need an arsenal of tools to be a successful affiliate, and so I recommend reading a few different eBooks or guides on the subject and comparing the tools. The small investment you make in these educational materials will well worth the money.

Many people try Affiliate Marketing for a few days, and then when they do not have a sale, they give up. It does take work, so don’t expect to get rich overnight. However, if you put some time and effort into the business, you can reap great rewards. I have an excellent guide now available at the Affiliate Cash Pilot at http://www.affiliatecashpilot.com

Why You Should Use Flash For Your Web Audio

Posted on February 19th, 2007. About General.

There are a number of different ways to add audio to your web site. Some can be a bit hit and miss and others can work out just plain expensive.

So what is a quick and easy way to add audio to your web site with out breaking the bank?

You have probably guessed from the title of this article but I would like to show you why by giving you all of the options.

The cheapest and easiest way to add audio to your web site is to simply upload an mp3 file to your web site and create a link to it on your web page, job done! Well not quite, there are pros and cons to this method. If you want your visitors to be able to download your mp3 so they can listen to it at a later date on their computer or iPod, (this is called pod casting) the link method is perfect. Simply instruct your visitors to right click on the link and select “save target as” (or “save link as” in Firefox).

If you want your visitors to be able to play your audio file immediately online then there are a few problems. If the link is clicked on a number of things could happen depending on which plug-ins are installed. If iTunes or QuickTime is installed the mp3 will download and play in a new browser window. Otherwise the mp3 could play in Windows Media Player, Real Player or another application like WinAmp or maybe not play at all.

Another method of adding audio to your web page would be to embed the audio into the page. With a bit of html code, instead of the player opening in a separate window it will appear on your web page. This also depends on which plug-ins are installed so it may play in a variety of players or not play at all!

There are other options like using a dedicated server or proprietary software but these can be expensive and your visitors would probably need to download extra software before they could play your audio. These options can work out very expensive and should only be considered if you are going to have very large volumes of downloads.

So, let’s consider Flash Audio. The Flash plug-in is estimated to be on 98% of computers on the Internet. You can create audio buttons to fit on your web page in whatever position you want and in your colour scheme. Flash uses mp3 audio which will stream over any connection. So will flash audio you are in complete control. The only problem is that would need to buy and learn Macromedia Flash or pay someone else to do it. That is until recently when a number of cheap and easy to use software packages have come onto the market which enables anyone who can cut and paste, to add Flash streaming audio to their web site. Most of these programs have been listed and reviewed at www.websiteaudioeviews.com

So now any one can create professional and reliable audio buttons on their web site.

Broadcasting on Mobiles

Posted on February 17th, 2007. About General.

ITV, the biggest commercial television network in the UK, broadcasting the most talked about television and making a major contribution to the UK’s culture, economy and communities has also became the first terrestrial broadcaster that started to broadcast its programmes on mobile phone handsets in the UK.

ITV1 which is the most popular commercial television channel in Britain watched on average by 45 million people every week and has the largest programme budget of any commercial channel in Europe and quiz network ITV Play have offered on 3 networks, with users charged daily or monthly rates. The fans of Coronation Street, The X Factor and Prime Suspect can view their favourite shows via their mobile phone handsets.

ITV network is saying that the other channels will be available in the coming months and will “roll out fairly quickly from now onwards”. Further more ITV’s spokeswoman advised that the service would be available to nearly 90% of the UK’s population.

The new technology attracts most of the broadcasters as the statistics shows.

O2, a leading provider of mobile services to consumers and businesses in the UK, a leader in non-voice services and data connections via GPRS, 3G and WLAN made an experiment on around 400 people who were access to 16 channels. The results revealed by this experiment are astonishing showing that 80 per cent of participants would subscribe to a mobile TV service if it was available.

Sky joined with Vodafone and launched a 19-channel mobile service while BT offered video from Sky News, Channel 4 and Cartoon Network.

BBC was not out of the competition offering pre-recorded content for mobiles including bonus clips to accompany Rob Brydon’s BBC Three comedy Annually Retentive.

The bad news for the fans of the new technology who already started to watch programmes on mobile phones or computers is that they will need a TV licence to do it because these broadcasts are governed by the same rules as traditional television sets. The TV Licensing advised that the ones that don’t pay for the TV licence may face fines of £1,000.

Jobs for Over 45

Posted on February 15th, 2007. About General.

Recent studies reveal that more employers are trying to recruit older people to overcome a shortage of skilled workers.

The firms are introducing age diverse practices even ahead of the new regulations in October and the reason is that this enables employers to tap into the relatively unused talent pool of older workers to overcome recruitment difficulties and help build an age diverse workforce that can add real value to business, not just in terms of older workers but all age groups.

The reports and statistics show that older workers will find difficult to get jobs. But this is true only for the poorly educated, blue-collar workers who have only done one thing all their lives. But older workers who are prepared to be flexible and have some transferable skills should have no problems finding work. At least this is what Barry Badham, the director of Dinosaurs Unlimited is saying.

Dinosaurs Unlimited, a recruitment agency which specialises in helping the over-45s find work, was established in April 2001 in order to help combat ageism in today’s workplace and provide small to medium sized businesses with the wealth of experience and knowledge that a mature professional executive has accumulated over the years. The concept has been widely accepted by many employers throughout the West Midlands and, increasingly from other parts of the UK and even overseas, and their success has been achieved by supplying high quality candidates that accurately match the requirements of the vacancy. A Dinosaur is an experienced and professional business executive who is likely to be over the age of 45 and has usually either been paid off, or made redundant from, a large company. Due to mergers, downsizing, business failure or the age discrimination practiced by some large multi-national companies, many senior and middle managers over the age of 45 find themselves out of work through no fault of their own.

According to the director of this agency it has become “easier and easier” to place mature workers. From more than 4,000 older workers, 20-30 percent are actively looking for work at any one time.

Mr. Barry Badham talks about a change in employer’s attitudes to older workers in recent years and the benefits these workers can bring: “Increasingly employers are looking to take on an older member of staff who can act as a mentor to help guide some of the younger, up-and-coming members of the team. They’re often seen as a safe pair of hands.”

Maybe one of the reasons of the increasing request for older workers on the market is that employers are fed up with younger members of staff who only want to party, who come late on Mondays and spend all morning telling colleagues how drunk they got over the weekend. Mr Badham argues that “mature workers generally aren’t out clubbing every night. They turn up and get on with the job.”

Even if most of the full-time jobs Dinosaurs Unlimited recruits for are management positions, they also offer jobs in call centers and a variety of other positions at various levels of pay. The only condition for the applicants is to be flexible and have the right attitude. Mr. Badham explains that “if they want a job, there is work out there, but they do need those attributes. I can see that poorly educated, blue-collar workers who have only done one thing all their lives could struggle.”

Jobserve has an extensive database of jobs available for jobseekers.

Celebrity Charity Auctions Gain New Life on Internet

Posted on February 13th, 2007. About General.

Many companies competed to put charity auctions on the Web during the first Internet boom. An online auction opens up the bidding to a wider audience and takes up less time and space.

Charities have long sold items owned by celebrities, but eBay and the Internet have pumped new life into this fund-raising technique.

Warren Buffett is auctioning his 2001 Lincoln Town Car on eBay Inc.’s Web site to benefit a nonprofit group that offers educational and recreational programs for girls.
The auction has started on 12th of September with an opening bid of $25,000. This eBay auction would be the third this year for the 75-year-old Buffett. In June, he auctioned a steakhouse lunch for up to eight people to a Palo Alto, California investor for $620,100. In May, a Buffett-autographed ukulele went for $11,211.11.

Last year, the actor George Clooney gave his Oscar gift bag to United Way for Hurricane Katrina relief and recovery. At auction, it raised $45,100.

In 2001, Leno auctioned off a Harley-Davidson motorcycle signed by his celebrity guests in an effort to help victims of the September 11 attacks. The bike sold for about $360,000. In 2005, he repeated the gesture twice: early in the year to aid victims of the 2004 Indian Ocean Earthquake — the bike sold for $810,000; and later to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina. That bike sold for $1,505,100.

Since 2000, more than $81 million has been raised for charity on eBay from regular vendors committing a part of their sales to nonprofit groups and by charities selling items directly. On any given day, more than 8,000 such sales are going on.
For the conventional sellers standard fees are charged. But under a new policy effective Oct. 1, the fees will be returned to them in direct proportion to the percentage of the final sales value they have pledged to donate.

There are no fees for nonprofits selling items on eBay.

It seems that through the Internet, charitable causes and events are pumped with new energy and accessibility, allowing this fund-raising technique to become more widely recognizable and increasing “returns exponentially.”
